Troubleshooting WebTV (UNDER CONSTRUCTION)

For whatever reason, if your Internet terminal did not successfully connect to WebTV Redialed, you will have to figure out what the issue may be. You can utilize the many common dialing errors your Internet terminal or Dreamcast provides you to source what could be causing troubles.

DreamPi, VoIP and Landline: If you see "The phone line appears to be in use or is disconnected. Please check the line and try again." when dialing

If your Internet terminal errors out at "Dialing 14848201337" or "Dialing toll free", it was unable to recieve any dial tone from the connected phone line, or there is no phone line connected. Make sure your phone line is connected to BOTH your Internet terminal, and your USB modem, VoIP adapter or wall jack.

If you use DreamPi, make sure the lights on your modem are both on, and steady. If you're sure your modem is working, make sure the power supply for your line voltage inducer is plugged into the wall, and not an extension cord. If that still doesn't work, remove any electrical tape or heat-sinking material from your line voltage inducer's connection point, and verify the phone line and the power supply's wires are connected. If that doesn't work, ensure your Raspberry Pi is connected and running the correct build. If, after all of this, your WebTV/MSNTV unit still displays a phone line error, your Internet terminal's internal modem may be damaged, and you will have to obtain a new terminal.

If you use VoIP, make sure your adapter is connected to the Internet. Make sure you plugged the Ethernet cable into the WAN port, not the Ethernet port. If you have verified your adapter is connected properly to the Internet, try switching up how it connects. (NOTE: This part is optional, and not guaranteed to work.) Unplug your adapter from your router or network switch, and plug it into your computer's Ethernet port. This entire guide assumes you are running Microsoft Windows, and at the very least Windows 7, and that you use Wi-Fi. Right click on your Internet status in the taskbar, and click "Open Network and Sharing Center". When it opens, under "View your active networks", click the link labeled "Wi-Fi (ACCESS POINT NAME)", and then click "Properties" on the pop-up. Click to "Sharing", and check "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection". At the drop-down, select - or type - Ethernet, and save your settings. Ensuring the Ethernet cable is connected to your PC, and the WAN port on your adapter, connect the phone line from Line 1 into your Internet terminal, and try dialing. If that doesn't work, ensure your adapter is actually unlocked by following the top of this guide. If you have ensured your adapter is unlocked, make sure your SIP settings match that of those listed in the guide, and that they are assigned to the correct Line. If you have accidentally assigned these settings to Line 2, 3, 4, onwards, simply switch to Line 1 and place these settings there. Connect the correct Line number to your Internet terminal, and try dialing. If, after all of this, your Internet terminal still displays a phone line error, either your Internet terminal's modem or your adapter may be damaged, and you will have to obtain a new Internet terminal or VoIP adapter.

If you use landline, first and foremost, enter dialing options and enable Audible dialing in the advanced options. This will allow you to more easily figure out if your Internet terminal is actually attempting to connect. Once that's done, make sure nothing or no-one else is using your phone line, as this can cause your Internet terminal to interrupt the call. You should also make sure you actually have landline service by plugging a phone into the wall jack, and taking it off the hook. If you hear dial tone, try calling a number, preferably one that is automated or the number of someone who will actually accept a hang-up call. If you're able to call someone using your landline, ensure there is nothing blocking the connection between the phone line's connector and your Internet terminal or wall jack's pins. If the inside of your Internet terminal or wall jack's RJ11 connector is dirty, some electronic-safe compressed air should clean it out. After spraying down your jacks, and letting them dry, connect your phone line to your wall and your Internet terminal and try to dial. If this still doesn't work, make sure your terminal is dialing the right number.

Landline: If you see "Dialing XXX-XXX-XXXX..."

Your Internet terminal is dialing an access number, and will need to have said number reset. To reset the number your Internet terminal is dialing, unplug it from power, and plug it back in. You should see an error message with text along the lines of "If your Internet terminal is no longer calling from XXX-XXX-XXXX, choose Moved to check for local numbers." Select "Moved". This will reset your terminal's TellyScript, and begin dialing the central number.

Landline: If you see "Dialing toll free"

Your Internet terminal is not dialing an access number, and is instead trying to call the central number to obtain one.

In both scenarios, you will need to replace the number yourself, anyways. To do this, you will have to enter what is called "Spooky Dialing Options" (Obscure Dialing Options on MSNTV builds).

Utilize the steps for clearing your TellyScript and changing the access number found in the Landline connection guide. Once you have flushed the TellyScript and confirmed the number is correct (14848201337), connect your terminal to the wall, and try to dial again. If this doesn't work, make sure your terminal is dialing correctly as per your landline service. Allow your terminal to error out, and then access dialing options. Enter basic settings, and check the box next to Pulse dialing if you have pulse dialing service, and uncheck it if you have tone dialing service. After setting up your service correctly, try to dial again. If this doesn't work, enter advanced settings and turn off Wait for dial tone, and then try to dial again. If that doesn't work, try connecting your terminal to a different phone jack, if you have one. If, after all of this, your Internet terminal still displays a phone line error, either your landline doesn't work or is out of service or your Internet terminal is damaged, and you will have to either renew your landline service or obtain a new Internet terminal.

DreamPi, VoIP and Landline: If you see "Your Internet terminal/WebTV Plus reciever/reciever is having trouble connecting." when dialing

If your Internet terminal errors out at "Waiting for answer" while dialing, it was able to recieve dial tone (or you turned Wait for dial tone off), but couldn't connect to WebTV Redialed.
